Use image descriptions and text tools

Use meaningful descriptions and optional image tooltips without changing the default page appearance.

Descriptions and linked images

Image alternative text and clear link names help visitors understand visual content and destinations. A linked logo, menu tile, or PDF image should describe its purpose. A description is not a guarantee that every detail inside an image has been extracted.

Optional tooltips

Image tooltips are off by default. Turn on Image tooltips if you want available descriptions when hovering or focusing supported images. Disable assistance for this browser to return to original-site image behavior.

Text inside images

Where image-text tools are offered, request extraction and review the result. Handwriting, low resolution, unusual layouts, and photographs may not yield reliable text. Important information should also be provided as authored text.

Owner responsibilities

Keep source alternatives useful and current. Review product imagery, restaurant menus, banners, and image-based calls to action. Tell support which image, page, device, and action failed without sending confidential material.
